Living in Windcrest, TX
Windcrest is a small incorporated city of about 5,900 people in northeast San Antonio, about 10 miles from downtown. It covers roughly 2 square miles, is surrounded by other cities and county land, and is known for its mid-century ranch homes, big live oaks and a holiday lights tradition that goes back to the 1950s.
Getting around
Windcrest sits near the interchange of I-35 and Loop 410, and Walzem Road is the main business corridor. That puts downtown San Antonio about 10 miles away and San Antonio International Airport about 9 miles away. Fort Sam Houston and JBSA-Randolph are each a short drive.
Things to do
- The Windcrest Light-Up, the city's annual holiday lights contest, which has earned it the nickname "The City of Lights"
- Takas Park, with tennis and basketball courts, a soccer field, a Little League field, a playground and a walking loop around a pond
- Brook Falls Park and Autumn Sunset Park, each with a walking trail around a pond
- Winn Park, with covered seating, a playground and a pickleball court
- Windcrest Golf Club, a 9-hole course that runs through the neighborhood
Schools
Windcrest is served by North East ISD, which includes Windcrest Elementary. Attendance zones can change, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.
Homes and neighborhoods
Most homes in Windcrest are single-story ranch and mid-century homes from the 1950s through the 1970s, often with brick or limestone exteriors on lots shaded by mature oaks. Since the city is fully surrounded and has little room to grow, new construction is rare, and buyers here are usually comparing updated homes with ones ready for a refresh.
A little history
Murray and Barbee Winn developed Windcrest on former farmland, and the first house was built in 1954. The city incorporated in 1959, and Barbee Winn came up with the idea of lighting up every house for the holidays, which grew into the Light-Up.
