Living in Temple, TX

Temple sits on I-35 in Bell County, about 65 miles north of Austin and about 34 miles south of Waco. It's a medical and rail town at heart, with a growing list of neighborhoods, and buyers often tell me they're surprised by how much there is to do here.

Getting around

I-35 runs right through Temple, and US 190 connects west to Belton, Killeen and the Fort Hood area. Amtrak's Texas Eagle stops at the historic Temple station, and Draughon-Miller Central Texas Regional Airport serves general aviation. For commercial flights, Killeen Regional Airport is about 32 miles west.

Things to do

  • Belton Lake, just west of town, for boating, fishing, camping and picnicking, with Temple Lake Park on its shore
  • Miller Springs Nature Center, with trails for hiking, photography and bird watching
  • Temple Railroad & Heritage Museum, inside the restored Santa Fe depot, with Harvey House memorabilia
  • Cultural Activities Center and Temple Civic Theatre for art, music and live shows
  • Sammons Golf Course, the city's public course

Work and schools

Baylor Scott & White Health is Temple's largest employer, and McLane Company and Wilsonart are headquartered here. Temple College, Texas A&M College of Medicine and Baylor College of Medicine all have campuses in town. Most of the city is served by Temple ISD, with smaller areas in Belton ISD, Academy ISD and Troy ISD, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.

Homes and neighborhoods

You'll find historic homes near downtown, established neighborhoods with mature trees, and newer subdivisions and new construction on the edges of town. Some buyers also look at small acreage just outside the city limits.

A little history

Temple began on June 29, 1881, as a Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway construction camp called Temple Junction. It was named for railroad engineer Bernard Moore Temple and incorporated in 1882.
