Living in New Braunfels, TX

New Braunfels is the Comal County seat, about 48 miles southwest of Austin and 32 miles northeast of San Antonio. It's known for its German heritage, two spring-fed rivers and the historic Gruene district, and it has grown into one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

Getting around

I-35 runs through New Braunfels, putting both Austin and San Antonio within reach, with SH 46 and Loop 337 connecting the rest of town. San Marcos is about 19 miles north.

Things to do

  • The Comal and Guadalupe rivers, two of the most popular tubing rivers in Texas. The spring-fed Comal stays about 70 to 72 degrees year-round.
  • Gruene Historic District, home to Gruene Hall, built in 1878 and billed as Texas' oldest continually operating dance hall
  • Schlitterbahn, the original location of the water park
  • Landa Park, a 51-acre city park at Comal Springs with trails, a miniature train and an aquatic complex
  • Wurstfest every November, a German-style sausage festival, plus Wassailfest downtown in December

Canyon Lake is about 16 miles northwest for boating and camping, and Natural Bridge Caverns is a short drive away.

Schools

New Braunfels ISD and Comal ISD serve most of the city, in separate areas, and small portions in Guadalupe County fall in Marion ISD and Navarro ISD. I confirm the school assignment for every address.

Homes and neighborhoods

You'll find historic homes near downtown and Gruene, established neighborhoods, Hill Country homes and acreage to the west, river properties, and plenty of new construction in master-planned communities. Some areas are in the floodplain, so I check flood zones and insurance for every home near the rivers.

A little history

Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels founded New Braunfels in 1845 with German immigrants, who forded the Guadalupe River that March. By 1850 it was the fourth-largest city in Texas.
