Living in Hurst, TX
Hurst is a Mid-Cities suburb of about 40,000 in northeast Tarrant County, roughly 10 miles from downtown Fort Worth and about 25 miles from downtown Dallas. It sits between Fort Worth and DFW Airport, surrounded by Bedford, Euless, North Richland Hills, Colleyville and Richland Hills, and it's known for North East Mall and its established neighborhoods.
Getting around
The SH 121/183 Airport Freeway runs through Hurst, with TEXpress express lanes that opened in 2014, and Loop 820 is just to the west. DFW Airport is about 13 miles away. The Trinity Railway Express stops at Hurst/Bell Station, with trains to downtown Fort Worth and downtown Dallas.
Things to do
- North East Mall, opened in 1972 and one of the largest shopping centers in Texas
- Chisholm Park, the city's largest park at about 50 acres, home to the Chisholm Aquatics Center with a lazy river and slide towers
- Artisan Center Theater, a 150-seat community theater staging musicals, comedies and dramas
- Hurst Public Library and Library Park, with a multi-purpose trail system
- Heritage Village Plaza, with a Texas historical marker and a bust of the city's founder
Schools
Most of Hurst is served by Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, and smaller portions fall in Birdville ISD, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD and Keller ISD. Because the lines can be close, I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.
Homes and neighborhoods
Much of Hurst was built during the city's growth after Bell Helicopter opened its plant nearby in the 1950s, so you'll find many established neighborhoods with mature trees, along with some newer homes scattered through the city. With homes of so many different ages, I look closely at updates and condition when comparing prices.
A little history
Hurst is named for William L. Hurst, who donated land for a depot when the Rock Island railroad came through in 1903. The city incorporated in 1952, the year after Bell announced its plant in the area.
