Living in Killeen & Fort Hood, TX
Killeen is the largest city in Bell County, about 55 miles north of Austin, and it sits right next to Fort Hood, one of the largest Army installations in the country. If you're relocating with a PCS move or just want more home for your budget in Central Texas, I'm happy to walk you through the area.
About the name
The post was named Fort Hood for decades, renamed Fort Cavazos in 2023, and officially returned to the Fort Hood name in July 2025. You'll still see both names on signs, maps and paperwork, so don't let that confuse your search.
Getting around
I-14/US 190 runs through Killeen and connects east to I-35 in Belton, with SH 195 heading south toward Florence and Georgetown. Killeen Regional Airport offers commercial flights, and the HOP provides local bus service. Harker Heights sits just to the east and Copperas Cove to the west.
Things to do
- National Mounted Warrior Museum, near the Bernie Beck gate, free and open without a visitor's pass
- Stillhouse Hollow Lake, south of town, for fishing, boating, picnicking and birding
- Mayborn Science Theater, a planetarium on the Central Texas College campus
- Andy K. Wells Hike and Bike Trail, starting at the Killeen Community Center
- Stonetree Golf Club, a public course with hilly terrain and water features
Schools
Nearly all of Killeen is served by Killeen ISD, with small areas in Salado ISD. Texas A&M University-Central Texas and Central Texas College are both here. I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.
Homes and neighborhoods
Killeen has established neighborhoods from the 1970s through the 2000s, plus a lot of newer construction. Many homes here are eligible for VA, FHA and conventional financing, and I help buyers think through resale and leasing from the start.
A little history
The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway platted Killeen in 1881 and named it for Frank P. Killeen, the railroad's assistant general manager. Camp Hood opened next door in 1942.
