Living in Weatherford, TX

Weatherford is the county seat of Parker County, about 25 miles west of downtown Fort Worth on I-20. It's a historic courthouse town that has grown steadily as the Metroplex has pushed west, and it still has the feel of a Texas county seat, with a busy square, peach orchards nearby and plenty of land outside town.

Getting around

I-20 runs along the south side of Weatherford and is the main route east to Fort Worth. Dallas is about 60 miles east, and DFW Airport is roughly 50 miles away. US 180 runs through the middle of town, and SH 171 heads north and south, toward Cleburne to the southeast.

Things to do

  • The Parker County Courthouse, completed in 1886 from local limestone and the centerpiece of the downtown square
  • Chandor Gardens, a 3.5-acre garden created in 1936 by portrait painter Douglas Chandor and now owned by the city
  • The Parker County Peach Festival, the city's biggest event, held each summer in a place the Legislature named the "Peach Capital of Texas"
  • First Monday Trade Days, held the Friday through Sunday before the first Monday of each month, with antiques, crafts and food
  • Lake Weatherford and Weatherford College, which has served the area for more than 150 years

Schools

Most of the city is served by Weatherford ISD. Parker County also has several other districts, including Aledo, Peaster, Brock and Garner ISDs, and homes on the edges of town or out in the county can fall in one of them. I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.

Homes and acreage

Weatherford has older and historic homes near the square, established neighborhoods across town, and newer subdivisions, especially toward I-20 and the east side. Outside the city limits you'll find a lot of acreage, ranchettes and horse properties. With rural homes, I also check well and septic, easements and county taxes.

A little history

Weatherford was incorporated in 1858 and named for State Senator Thomas Jefferson Weatherford. Broadway star Mary Martin, best known for playing Peter Pan, grew up here.
