Living in Lytle, TX
Lytle is a small city about 25 miles southwest of San Antonio on I-35. Most of the city is in Atascosa County, with small parts in Medina and Bexar counties. It has a small-town downtown and quick interstate access, and it's surrounded by ranch land and acreage. The city had about 2,900 people at the 2020 census.
Getting around
I-35 runs through the southeast part of Lytle, with access at Exit 131, and is the main route northeast into San Antonio. San Antonio International Airport is about 35 miles away. SH 132 is the city's main street, and Castroville and the Medina River are a short drive north.
Things to do
- John Lott Park, home to the city's annual Fourth of July celebration and fireworks, its biggest event of the year
- Veterans Memorial Park and the Lytle Community Center
- Downtown Lytle, the original town center that grew up around the railroad
- Castroville, nearby, with its historic Alsatian buildings and Castroville Regional Park on the Medina River
Schools
Nearly all of Lytle is served by Lytle ISD, which is based in northwest Atascosa County and reaches into Medina County. Small sections of the city are served by Southwest ISD and Natalia ISD, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.
Homes and acreage
Lytle has older homes near downtown, established streets, and some newer subdivisions as the area grows. Outside the city limits, there's a lot of acreage, small ranches and homes on larger lots in Atascosa and Medina counties. With rural homes, I also check well and septic, easements and county taxes. Since Lytle crosses three counties, I always check the county and tax rate for each home.
A little history
Lytle grew up around Lytle Station, established on the International-Great Northern Railroad in 1882 with help from rancher and trail driver John T. Lytle. Coal mining joined ranching and farming in the local economy in the late 1890s, and the city incorporated in 1951.
