Living in Whitehouse, TX

Whitehouse is a small city in southeastern Smith County, about 6 miles southeast of Tyler. It has grown steadily for decades, and with Lake Tyler right next door, it's one of the first places I suggest to buyers looking at the Tyler area.

Getting around

SH 110 and FM 346 cross in the middle of town. Tyler is about 6 miles northwest on SH 110, and Toll 49 ends at SH 110 near Whitehouse, giving you a quick route around the south and west sides of Tyler to I-20. Longview is about 45 miles northeast, and Dallas is roughly 110 miles west.

Things to do

Lake Tyler, a water supply and recreation lake just east of town for boating and fishing
The YesterYear Celebration, held the fourth weekend of June, with parades, a carnival, historic reenactments, pageants and trade days
Tyler, a short drive away, with the Rose Garden, Caldwell Zoo and plenty of shopping and dining

Schools

Whitehouse is served by Whitehouse ISD, which also covers parts of southeast Tyler. The district actually predates the city, and it played a big part in Whitehouse's formation. Some homes outside the city limits fall in neighboring districts, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.

Homes and neighborhoods

Whitehouse has established neighborhoods in town, newer subdivisions on the edges and wooded lots and acreage in the surrounding countryside, so you can compare a range of home ages, lot sizes and price points. Lake Tyler adds another option, with waterfront and lake-area homes just outside the city.

A little history

According to local tradition, Whitehouse is named for a whitewashed building near the railroad tracks that served as a school, church and meeting place, where steam engines stopped for water. The city was incorporated in 1953.
