Living in Athens, TX

Athens is the county seat of Henderson County, about 35 miles west of Tyler and roughly 75 miles southeast of Dallas. It has a classic courthouse square, a lake inside the city limits and a community college campus, and it proudly calls itself the "Original Home of the Hamburger" and the "Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the World."

Getting around

US 175 runs through Athens and connects northwest toward Dallas and east toward the Tyler area. State Highways 19 and 31 also meet here, with SH 31 heading east to Tyler and SH 19 running north and south through the county.

Things to do

  • The Athens Old Fiddlers Reunion, a fiddling contest and reunion on the Henderson County Courthouse square that held its 95th gathering in 2026
  • The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, run by Texas Parks and Wildlife on Lake Athens, home to the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame
  • Lake Athens, a reservoir of about 1,800 acres on the east side of the city for fishing and boating
  • The East Texas Arboretum, about 100 acres inside the city with gardens, nature trails and a suspension footbridge
  • Purtis Creek State Park, about 15 miles northwest, for camping and fishing

Schools

Most of Athens is served by Athens ISD, and a small eastern portion falls in Brownsboro ISD. Trinity Valley Community College has its main campus in Athens. Homes outside the city limits may be in other districts, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.

Homes and neighborhoods

Athens offers established homes on tree-lined streets near downtown, newer neighborhoods on the edges of town, lake homes around Lake Athens, and acreage and small ranches in the surrounding Henderson County countryside. If you're looking at lake or rural property, I'll help you check water, septic, floodplain and any lake association rules before you commit.

A little history

Athens became the Henderson County seat in 1850 and was first incorporated in 1856. Local lore credits Fletcher Davis with serving one of the first hamburgers at his lunch counter here, and in 2006 the Texas Legislature recognized Athens as the "Original Home of the Hamburger."
