Living in Troup, TX

Troup is a small railroad town in southeastern Smith County, with its city limits reaching south into Cherokee County. It's about 19 miles southeast of Tyler, and it's a good fit if you want rolling East Texas countryside, room to spread out and a short drive to the city.

Getting around

State Highway 110 runs through the center of town, leading northwest to Tyler and south to Rusk, and SH 135 heads northeast toward Arp and Kilgore. Jacksonville is about 17 miles southwest, and FM 13, 15, 346 and 347 connect to the surrounding countryside.

Things to do

  • Downtown Troup, with historic buildings along Duval Street, including the Knights of Pythias Lodge building
  • The Arp Strawberry Festival, a spring tradition in neighboring Arp, about 3 miles north
  • Tyler, about 19 miles away, for shopping, dining and the Tyler Rose Garden
  • Jacksonville's Tomato Fest, held each June about 17 miles southwest

Schools

Troup is served by Troup ISD. Some rural properties around town fall in neighboring districts, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.

Homes, land and acreage

Around Troup you'll find older homes in town, newer homes on larger lots, and plenty of rural acreage, pasture and wooded land. Buying land is different from buying a house in town, so I'll help you check the details that matter:

  • Water: wells or a water supply corporation
  • Septic systems and soil
  • Surveys, easements and road access
  • Ag or wildlife tax exemptions
  • Deed restrictions, minerals and floodplain

A little history

Troup grew up in the early 1870s where a new railroad line split toward Tyler and Longview. Its post office opened as Zavala in 1873 and was renamed Troup in 1877, and the town later became a busy shipping point for East Texas fruits and vegetables.
