Living in Taylor, TX
Taylor is a historic railroad town in eastern Williamson County, about 29 miles northeast of downtown Austin. It's known for its downtown, its barbecue and, more recently, Samsung's semiconductor campus, which has put Taylor on a lot of buyers' radar.
Getting around
US 79 runs through Taylor, connecting west to Hutto (about 9 miles) and Round Rock (about 18 miles), and SH 95 runs north and south through town. SH 130 is a short drive west, which makes trips to Pflugerville, Austin and the airport easier. Taylor also has an Amtrak stop on the Texas Eagle line.
Things to do
- Louie Mueller Barbecue, a downtown landmark since 1949, plus several other barbecue spots
- Historic downtown Taylor, with shops, restaurants, antique stores, the Moody Museum and a self-guided architectural walking tour
- Heritage Square, a downtown park with an amphitheater, splash pad and farmers market
- Taylor Regional Park, Murphy Park and Bull Branch Park, connected by miles of trails
- Granger Lake, about 8 miles away, for fishing, camping and boating
Schools
Taylor is served by Taylor ISD, which includes Taylor High School and Legacy Early College High School. Some homes outside the city fall in neighboring districts, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.
Homes and neighborhoods
Taylor has some of the most character-filled homes in the county, including older and historic homes near downtown. You'll also find established neighborhoods, a growing amount of new construction, and farmland and acreage on the edges of town.
A little history
Taylor was founded in 1876 ahead of the International-Great Northern Railroad and named for railroad official Edward Moses Taylor. Rodeo cowboy Bill Pickett, credited with inventing bulldogging, is one of the best-known names from Taylor's past.
