Living in Marshall, TX
Marshall is the county seat of Harrison County, about 40 miles west of Shreveport and about 23 miles east of Longview. It's one of the oldest cities in East Texas, with a historic courthouse square, three colleges and a holiday light festival that draws visitors from across the region.
Getting around
I-20, US 59 and US 80 all meet in Marshall, so Longview, Shreveport and Texarkana are easy drives. Dallas is about 150 miles west on I-20. Marshall is also a stop on Amtrak's Texas Eagle, with trains leaving from the historic Texas & Pacific depot.
Things to do
- Wonderland of Lights, Marshall's holiday festival, when the courthouse square and downtown are covered in lights
- The FireAnt Festival, a downtown fall tradition for more than 40 years, with a parade, races, contests and live music
- The Texas & Pacific Railroad Museum, in the 1912 depot that still serves Amtrak
- The Harrison County Historical Museum and the historic downtown around the courthouse
- Caddo Lake, northeast of town, with its cypress swamps, paddling trails and Caddo Lake State Park near Karnack
Schools
Marshall ISD is the only district covering the city limits. Homes outside the city may fall in neighboring districts, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address. Marshall is also home to East Texas Baptist University, Wiley University and Texas State Technical College, and Panola College has a Marshall campus.
Homes and neighborhoods
Marshall has a long history, and its housing reflects it: historic homes near downtown and the old railroad district, established neighborhoods with mature trees, newer homes on the edges of town, and wooded acreage and rural properties across Harrison County, including homes near Caddo Lake. Prices here can stretch further than in larger metros, and I'll help you compare options across the area.
A little history
Marshall was founded in 1841, became the Harrison County seat in 1842, and was named for Chief Justice John Marshall. During the Civil War it served as the capital of Missouri's exiled Confederate government, and the Texas & Pacific Railway later based its Texas shops here.
