Living in Burleson, TX

Burleson sits about 15 miles south of downtown Fort Worth on I-35W. Most of the city is in northern Johnson County, with a small part in Tarrant County. It's grown to nearly 50,000 people, with a revitalized Old Town, a big parks system and a wide range of neighborhoods.

Getting around

I-35W runs through Burleson and is the main route north to Fort Worth and south toward Alvarado. SH 174 starts at I-35W in north Burleson and heads southwest toward Joshua and Cleburne. Dallas is about 45 miles northeast, and DFW Airport is about 40 miles away.

Things to do

  • Old Town Burleson, the original townsite, with shops, restaurants and entertainment
  • Burleson Heritage Museum, in the old interurban station, which houses two of the original interurban cars
  • Russell Farm Art Center, with historic farm buildings, a community garden and events through the year
  • Bailey Lake Park, Chisenhall Fields and the BRiCk recreation center, with an indoor pool and waterslide
  • Hidden Creek Golf Course and Southern Oaks Golf & Tennis Club

Schools

Burleson is split among several districts. Most of the city is served by Burleson ISD or Joshua ISD, and some areas fall in Everman ISD or Mansfield ISD. Because the lines can change from one street to the next, I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.

Homes and neighborhoods

Burleson has older homes near Old Town, established neighborhoods from the 1980s through the 2000s, and plenty of newer construction, including communities like Shannon Creek. Outside the city limits, there are larger lots and acreage in Johnson County. Since Burleson crosses two counties, I always check the county and tax rate for each home.

A little history

Burleson was founded in 1880 as a depot on the Katy railroad between Fort Worth and Alvarado. Rev. Henry C. Renfro named it for his former teacher, Baylor University president Rufus C. Burleson, and the city incorporated in 1912.
