Living in Round Rock, TX

Round Rock sits about 20 miles north of downtown Austin, and it's one of the areas I work in most. You get quick access to Austin jobs and entertainment, plus a historic downtown, big parks and neighborhoods for just about every budget. Here's my take on living here.

Getting around

I-35 runs right through town, with SH 45, SH 130 and MoPac (Loop 1) close by. That makes the commute to Austin, Georgetown, Pflugerville and the airport straightforward, and it's why so many buyers start their search here.

Kalahari Resort, with a huge indoor waterpark that's open year-round

Work and schools

Dell Technologies is headquartered in Round Rock, and the city has a strong mix of retail, healthcare and tech employers. Most of the city is served by Round Rock ISD. Some areas on the edges fall in neighboring districts, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.

Homes and neighborhoods

Round Rock has a little of everything: older homes near downtown, established 1980s to 2000s subdivisions with mature trees, golf course communities like Forest Creek and Teravista, and new construction on the east and north sides.

A little history

The town is named for the large rock in Brushy Creek that marked a low-water crossing on the Chisholm Trail. It's also where the outlaw Sam Bass was shot by Texas Rangers in 1878, a story still retold during Frontier Days.
