Living in Converse, TX
Converse is a city of about 27,500 in northeast Bexar County, roughly 15 miles northeast of downtown San Antonio. It started as a small railroad and farming community and has grown into one of the busier suburbs on the northeast side, with a mix of established neighborhoods and new construction.
Getting around
Loop 1604 runs along the east side of Converse, separating it from JBSA-Randolph, and I-10 is just to the south for the drive downtown or toward Seguin. FM 1516, FM 78 (Seguin Road) and FM 1976 are the main local roads, and I-35 is a short drive north. San Antonio International Airport is about 15 miles away.
Things to do
- Converse North Park, with a lake formed by a 1960s flood control dam, fishing spots and a 1-mile loop around the sports fields
- Converse City Park, with ball fields, an outdoor fitness court, a fishing pier on the pond and dirt trails with hilltop views
- The Converse Greenway Trail, about 3 paved miles along Salitrillo Creek connecting Northampton Park, City Park and North Park
- Morgan's Wonderland and Retama Park, each a short drive away
Schools
Most of Converse is served by Judson ISD. Some areas fall in Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD, and part of the south side is in East Central ISD. Because the lines can change from one subdivision to the next, I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.
Homes and neighborhoods
Converse has older homes near the original town center, established neighborhoods from the 1980s through the 2000s, and a lot of newer construction, especially on the edges of the city. With several builders active here, comparing incentives, HOA dues and tax rates between communities is worth the time, and I help buyers line those up side by side.
A little history
Converse is named for Major James Converse, chief engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad, who bought the townsite in 1877. A post office opened in 1878, German farmers settled the area, and the city incorporated in 1961.
