Living in Canyon Lake, TX

Canyon Lake is a Hill Country lake community in Comal County, about 16 miles northwest of New Braunfels and roughly 40 miles southwest of Austin. The name covers the lake itself and the small communities around it, including Startzville, Sattler, Fischer and Canyon City.

Getting around

FM 306 and FM 2673 are the main roads around the lake. FM 306 runs southeast to New Braunfels and I-35, which puts San Antonio, San Marcos and Austin within reach.

Things to do

  • Canyon Lake, an 8,230-acre reservoir on the Guadalupe River with about 80 miles of shoreline for boating, fishing and swimming
  • Corps of Engineers parks around the shoreline for camping, swimming and picnicking, plus two marinas
  • Canyon Lake Gorge, carved out by the 2002 flood, with guided hikes that show off fossils and limestone formations
  • The Guadalupe River below the dam, popular for tubing, kayaking and fishing

Schools

The Canyon Lake area is served by Comal ISD. I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.

Homes and acreage

You'll find lakefront and lake-view homes, Hill Country homes on wooded lots, acreage, and newer subdivisions. Homes near the water come with extra questions, like flood zones, lake access, Corps of Engineers boundaries, septic and water source, and I'll help you check each one before you buy.

A little history

The Army Corps of Engineers began building Canyon Dam in 1958 and completed it in 1964. The lake reached its normal level in 1968.
