Living in Buda, TX

Buda sits in northeastern Hays County, about 15 miles southwest of downtown Austin. It has a walkable historic Main Street, a calendar full of small-town events, and quick access to Austin, which makes it one of the area's most popular suburbs.

Getting around

I-35 runs through Buda, and SH 45 Toll sits just north near the Travis County line, connecting to MoPac and SH 130. FM 1626 and FM 967 lead west toward the Hill Country and Driftwood. Kyle is a few minutes south.

Things to do

Historic Main Street, with local shops, restaurants and the downtown gazebo
Buda City Park, home to concerts, movie nights and community events
Historic Stagecoach Park, with the McElroy-Severn Stagecoach House, a state and national historic landmark that also serves as the visitor center
The wiener dog races every April, put on by the Buda Lions Club
Onion Creek, which runs along the northwest side of town

Schools

Buda is served by Hays CISD. I confirm the school assignment for every address.

Homes and neighborhoods

Buda offers a few older homes near downtown, established subdivisions from the 1990s and 2000s, and a lot of newer construction and master-planned communities on the edges of town. West of I-35 toward the Hill Country, you'll find larger lots and acreage. Some newer neighborhoods have MUDs or PIDs, so I always compare tax rates along with price.

A little history

Buda grew up along the railroad and was platted in 1881 as Du Pre. It was renamed in 1887 because another Texas town already had that name, and it incorporated in 1948.
