Living in Hearne, TX

Hearne is known as the Crossroads of Texas. It's in southwestern Robertson County, part of the Bryan-College Station metro area, and about 20 minutes from Bryan. Two railroads and three highways meet here, and the town has more history than its size suggests.

Getting around

SH 6, US 79 and US 190 all pass through Hearne. SH 6 runs south to Bryan-College Station and north toward Waco, about an hour away. Franklin is about 12 miles northeast and Calvert about 9 miles north.

Things to do

  • Camp Hearne WWII Historic Site & Exhibit, a former German POW camp with a recreated 1943 Army barracks
  • Hearne Depot Railroad and Local History Museum, in a restored 1901 train station
  • Hearne Municipal Golf Course, a public nine-hole course that opened in 1935
  • Downtown Hearne, with local restaurants and historic buildings, including a grill in the town's former post office

Schools

Hearne is served by Hearne ISD. Rural addresses can fall in neighboring districts, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.

Homes and acreage

You'll find older homes in town, some newer houses, and plenty of rural acreage and farm land in the surrounding area. With acreage, I'll help you check water, septic, surveys and access, ag exemptions and floodplain before you buy.

A little history

The railroad reached Hearne in 1868, and the town became a rail junction in 1870 and a cotton marketing center. During World War II, Camp Hearne held thousands of German prisoners of war from 1943 to 1946.
