Living in the Brazos Valley: A Local's Guide to Bryan-College Station

by Trina Heinmiller

When people ask me about the Brazos Valley, they usually mean Bryan and College Station, the twin cities at the heart of Brazos County. It's home to Texas A&M, a growing job market and a small-town feel that's hard to find in bigger Texas metros. Here's my local's take on living here, including two of my favorite spots in town.

Where is the Brazos Valley?

The Brazos Valley sits in Central Texas between the Brazos and Navasota rivers. Bryan and College Station run right into each other, so most people think of them as one community. You're roughly 90 minutes to two hours from Houston and Austin, which makes weekend trips and airport runs easy.

Bryan and College Station: what's the difference?

  • College Station grew up around Texas A&M. You'll find neighborhoods close to campus, newer subdivisions on the south side and plenty of shopping and dining.
  • Bryan is the older of the two cities, with a historic downtown full of local restaurants, shops and events, plus established neighborhoods and homes on larger lots.

Both cities share the same restaurants, parks and Aggie game-day energy, so you get the best of both no matter which side of town you choose.

Two local spots I love

A Blue Baker cup on a table inside Blue Baker in College Station

Blue Baker. Blue Baker has been a College Station favorite for years, with fresh pastries, bread and sandwiches. The patio is one of my go-to places to sit down with friends or catch up with past clients over coffee. If you're new to town, it's a great first stop.

Chicken Oil Company. Chicken Oil Company is back open in Bryan, and it's a mix of the old and the new. Longtime regulars will still feel at home, and the new back porch is perfect for Sunday lunches with everyone.

Why people move here

  • Texas A&M, along with the jobs, sports and events that come with it
  • Room to grow, from homes near campus to newer neighborhoods and acreage outside town
  • A close-knit feel, where you run into people you know at the coffee shop
  • An easy drive to Houston, Austin and the rest of Texas
